Activate the server texture
Three steps and Alkaz takes shape. It takes less than two minutes.
Java Edition
Requires OptiFine

Edit the AfterLands server
In Minecraft (recommended version: 1.8.9), go to Multiplayer, select the AfterLands server and click Edit.

Enable Resource Packs
Click "Resource Packs" until it reads "Enabled". Click Done and join the server as usual. The texture is enabled automatically.

Install OptiFine (or an alternative)
OptiFine already installed? Skip this step. Not yet? On 1.8.9 (the recommended version) OptiFine is required to render the textures. Download the build that matches your Minecraft and run the installer. Not sure how? The video is in the "Having trouble?" box below. On newer versions, or if you'd rather skip OptiFine, use an alternative to render correctly: CIT Resewn (Fabric) or Forge CIT (Forge).

Inside Minecraft, follow this path and turn Custom Items on:

Once enabled, the textures render again without restarting the game.
The texture won't download (or the prompt never shows)
Quick fix
Check, in this order:

Make sure Resource Packs are set to "Enabled" or "Prompt" (steps 1 and 2 above).

Restart Minecraft and rejoin the server.

If it still won't download, switch your Minecraft version to 1.8.9.
The download freezes at 100% or stays on "unloading texture"
Quick fix
Clear the resource pack cache:

In the menu, go to Options, then Resource Packs and click "Open Pack Folder".

In the address bar, click ".minecraft" and open the "server-resource-packs" folder.

Delete everything inside it. If the folder doesn't exist, create one with that name.

Restart Minecraft and join again.
